USC loses a 4-2 heartbreaker. The Trojans had a solid effort in the first period, and took a 1-0 lead. But fatigue started coming over the team in the second period and Buttweiler was peppered with shots. Despite that, USC still led 2-1 after 2. But the fatigue from the second turned into an outright collapse in the third. The Trojans gave up 3 unanswered in the final period and lost 4-2. Here are some notes from the game: - Michael Joyce had a solid performance. He absolutely undressed the Spartans' goaltender Murray on a breakaway before slipping the puck into the net for the Trojans' second goal. - But that goal couldn't have happened without a great save by Matt Buttweiler, who stoned a Spartan on the breakaway just seconds before. The Trojans then set up a beautiful counterattack. It was the best sequence of the game for USC. - Matt Buttweiler in general played out of his mind. He was peppered with shots and stood strong before finally cracking in the third period. Matt's getting hot at the right time, it's a little unfortunate the team in front of him was too tired to take advantage. - Another unfortunate part adding to the fatigue on defense was the late arrival of Dante Caravaggio, Clark McClanathan, and two other Trojans who I forgot about. It wasn't their fault. A hay truck traveling up the 5 freeway spilled just north of LA and blocked several lanes, creating a lengthy backup. The loss of Caravaggio for the first half of the first period meant that the Trojans only had 4 defensemen initially. That early wear and tear cost USC in the second and third. - Dante Caravaggio never really got rolling tonight either. The sure blueliner struggled on shots and clears all game long. Even the best of them are allowed an off game from time to time. He certainly wasn't the only player who struggled at clears for USC.
That's all. Official scorers for USC will be posted shortly.

USC Goal Scorers: Lewis (Szentveri, Joyce) Joyce (Landsinger, Caravaggio) - PP NOTE: I called McLinn as passing it to Joyce, but Landsinger's 13 and McLinn's 3, so maybe it was just me.
