2-0 SC after two, but the game isn't as close as the score might indicate. The Trojans just 20 minutes away from a Crosstown Cup win here at home! And no.... I won't be driving the zamboni between periods.

The Trojans win the Crosstown Cup! This was a very solid performance in all aspects for USC except possibly finishing goals. The team dominated UCLA from the start of the game, with the closest UCLA came to scoring coming at the end of the second period when Horowitz came in on a break and the puck was left sitting on the goalline. This series was great for USC because they were able to put their foot down and finish the game in dominating fashion. Out of 11 USC goals scored this series, 7 were scored in the third period. Here are some other game notes: - Matt Buttweiller was the game's MVP. He faced 23 shots and turned away all 23. This was Matt's first career shutout. I think part of it was made possible by me not saying the word shutout during the game. He had quick reflexes and moved across the crease well. It was a well deserved shutout. - But player of the game honors wasn't as easy of a decision as you might think. Matt Lewis had one hell of a game too. He had 2 points (1 goal, 1 assist) and was a tenacious defender inside of his own blueline. He held up well one on one, and was great on the penalty kill. If not for Buttweiller's shutout, he would clearly be the pick. - Alex Schauffhausen is starting to cement himself on that second line. He had a beautiful pass to set up Noah Comisar's nail-in-the-coffin goal in the third period. Alex has been playing well as a forward and it wouldn't surprise me to see Wilbur keep him there. - Mitchell Landsinger was the best penalty killer USC had last night, and with a little bit better shooting, would've added to his shorthanded goal tally. He had a breakaway and another solid chance on the PK, but just couldn't finish either of them off (credit to UCLA goaltender Dylan Ramos). Alex Lofthus got denied on a penalty killing breakaway as well, but made up for it with.... - Another beautiful tipped goal. Lewis sent a shot heading well wide of the net that Lofthus very consciously tipped past into the middle of the goal from the near faceoff circle. It was very intentionally played and a very nice tip, though Ramos was way way way out of position on the play. Lofthus scored a similar goal earlier this season (Game 2 against Washington I think). He sat near the bottom of the faceoff circle and tipped a wide shot into the upper corner of the net. - The team was wearing new white jerseys for the game, but there was a problem. The jerseys, instead of reading '4' on single-digit numbers, read '04'. Wilbur was not happy and frantically tried to sort out the situation prior to game time. - My apologies to Vishal Gajendran. He wore #29 tonight, and I didn't mention his name once because I wasn't positive whether 29 was Sedifard or Gajendran's number. My bad, Vishal. - It was awesome doing the starting lineups prior to the game. I was a public address announcer for a Junior A team back in Santa Fe for two seasons, so it was good to see that I still had it. Thanks Mike Locke for the opportunity! The Trojans are on the road against LBSU and LMU next Friday and Saturday for their last two games of the semester. They're both late games, but I'll have them for you (in their entirety) here on www.uscicehockey.com. Thanks, Alex
