Last season USC didn't have a tough time at all with LMU, but a lot can change over the course of a year. The Lions did have a couple talented players, and if I remember correctly they were competitive with USC for a decent part of that game.
If the Trojans come into this game ready, they should absolutely win. If they come in and expect to sleepwalk through 3 periods, this could be a trap game. The big question will be whether USC has Matt Buttweiler healthy and ready to go. Personally, I think he's aiming to come back for the Oregon series. If that really is the case, this game could be more interesting then we might expect it to be.

Hey everyone. Getting pumped up for tonight's game? Should be interesting to see if the Trojans come back strong after the home and home sweep against CSULB. This LMU team has just come off of a big sweep of UCLA. This will be a good game to see where each team is at right now at least in comparison to each other. I'm looking forward to bringing it to everyone live at 7:30 PST. Hope you tune in.

Hey, I appreciate it! That was arguably the most exciting game I've ever had the privilege of broadcasting. Good to start off my play-by-play season with a big win and an exciting game. I'm also broadcasting this upcoming series with Oregon, hope you guys tune in then too.

USC (2-3) 6 - LMU (3-2-1) 5 F/OT
USC Goals: Fyrwald (Lewis, Adler), Ozaki (Lofthus, Lewis), Frazier, Lofthus (Fyrwald), McLinn, Lofthus (Joyce)*GWG*
Shots:
USC 53 LMU 35
Valencia Nissan Player of the Game:
Alex Lofthus (2 g, 1 a - Game-winner with 10.8 seconds left in overtime)
Summary...
16 seconds into the second period it looked like LMU was in complete and total control. The Lions took a 4-1 lead early in period, and USC goaltender James Carcich was pulled in favor of Rich Dyer. USC was on their heels.
However a series of penalties on the Lions led to 4 straight USC powerplay goals, as USC took a 5-4 lead in the third. The Lions were able to answer back with a powerplay goal of their own to tie the game and force overtime.
Late in the extra stanza Mike Joyce forced a turnover in neutral ice while USC was short-handed, took the puck all the way into LMU's zone, and hit Alex Lofthus with a perfect pass to end the game with just 10.8 seconds remaining. It was a dramatic ending to an unexpectedly close, hard-fought game.
What We Learned...
USC can overcome adversity and a big deficit, even against a hot goalie. LMU's Chris Marks played an amazing game, but it didn't matter at the end.
LMU caught some lucky bounces in building up that 4-1 lead, and USC easily could have packed it in and given up. The fact that they battled back is a very positive sign for this young team that is still learning to play together.
A Plea From Alex Goldsmith...
Once the game was over, all my broadcast partner could talk about was how dynamic Mike Joyce and Alex Lofthus are on the ice together. I have a feeling he is going to be harassing Coach Wilbur to put the two of them on a line together on a permanent basis.
My question: if you do that, who centers the line? Ryder Fyrwald has proven to be a playmaker who gives 110% on every shift...he might be a good fit. But what about Ryan Farias, last year's leading scorer? Or even a grinder like Cory Adler, who could park himself in front of the net and have a field day putting in rebounds...there are so many possibilities for Coach Wilbur. What a good problem to have!
Big Time Props...
Rich Dyer deserves credit for stepping in early in the second period and playing a superb game between the pipes. Ryder Fyrwald may get overlooked after the game because of the play of Alex Lofthus, but he had a goal and a beautiful assist on one of Alex's goals.
Matt Lewis had a very good game, and created plenty of offense from the blueline. Same can be said of Brent Ozaki, who had a goal tonight as well.
Up Next...
The Trojans will play host to Pac-8 rival Oregon next week on the 19th and the 20th. Drop of the puck will be at 7:30pm. The Ducks definitely will have revenge on their minds after falling to USC in the last two Pac-8 Conference Finals. Come out to Anaheim Ice and support your Trojans!

That was a great game. I am surprised with how much better LMU has gotten. I think if they keep improving this year they could look at a final spot in regionals. Of course the SC powerplay dominated the game.
In my 15 years being involved in hockey thats one of the most exciting games I've seen

Here's the thing: yes, LMU is improved compared to last season. That's not saying a whole lot though. This was a game that USC should have dominated, but sloppy play through the first half of the game and strong goaltending kept LMU in it.
Chris Marks was superb for the Lions, or else this game would have been a blowout. Keep in mind too that USC didn't have Matt Buttweiler between the pipes. Factor in those two things and USC could have won this game 8-2 easily.
Still though, that was definitely an exciting game. I can tell you that was a heck of a lot of fun to broadcast. Hopefully we'll have 2 more really good games against Oregon next weekend.

I'm not sure I agree that it would have been that large of a split. LMU did get a few fluke goals, but besides the PK for SC played very even 5v5 during the game. The Trojan powerplay is what dominated the game. Yes Chris Marks did save them late, but a 6 goal difference seems a little large to me.

Keep in mind, had Buttweiler played that would have made a huge difference for USC.
I also feel like it took the Trojans half the game to finally come alive. Had they been at the top of their game for all three periods it would have been a drastically different outcome. A lot of similarities with the football team actually. Had they put together 4 solid quarters instead of just 2 against Arizona they probably would have met that three score spread.
Just my opinion though. LMu definitely deserves some of the credit for improving from last year.

I agree with Jake on this one. Its too much to hypothesize that if Marks was out and Buttweiler was in what would happen. Watching the game, I personally felt that while USC was the better team, they were really only about 2 goals better than LMU. LMU has some very talented players like Ryan Rosales, Chris Marks, and Nicky Cruz, but not a lot of depth at the moment. If they can improve their depth they could be a force in the future.
